Are there any primary professions or primary/secondary combos that are grossly overpopulated? Any that are grossly underpopulated?

Warrior/Monks and Monk/Warriors are grossly overpopulated, but those are the easiest ones to play, and are also the two best profession combinations for farming in the game.

As far as underpopulated professions go, Mesmers are probably at the top of the list. They're also potentially one of the most powerful, and are definitely one of the most underappreciated.

I was doing some reading, and I did indeed like mesmer.

IMO, maybe not the best char for your first one. It can be difficult to learn to play a mesmer, and you might find the learning curve frustrating.

Of course, I'll never tell somebody else how to play the game, but for an easy learning curve that will ease you into the game experience, w/mo might be the best way to go. Good armor, decent damage, and some self-heals. Just don't get caught up in the, "I have mending so I'm invincible" mindset that many w/mo's seem to have...

I'll consider that, but I normally don't mind a learning curve :-)

heh if you find mesmer fun, go for it. I chose a Ranger/Mesmer for my first char, probably one of the harder combinations to go for, simply because a bad ranger or mesmer will be totally ineffective. And I'll be honest, the other classes seem ridiculously easy now to me, but my R/Me is STILL my favourite and easiest to play. hehe.

Thing is, when you start, the only thing you're 'stuck' with without restarting is your primary profession, so you can choose all the secondaries for as long as you like in the tutorial area until you decide that yes, this is what i want, or no, I'm gonna go start a different primary profession.

take it at your own pace and have fun.

there are 3 other slots to try something else for variety.

these might help get started

ele needs a lot of energy that the mes cant supply if that helps.

can be done but restrictions apply and your mileage may vary

Play a Mo/Me. we need good monks.

or an E/Mo. that's a pretty decent healer.

If Mes is gonna be primary, go Me/Mo. and do fast resser. absolutley no use until later missions.

Playing a Mesmer requires a knowledge of the skills used in the game by every profession. While they are not difficult to play, they dont wont make the best first character for everyone. However, if you really want to make a mesmer, no one is going to stop you.

By the way, if you're thinking ranger secondary will allow you to use a bow or a pet effectively you're wrong.

to be honest..even though you *should* be able to rely on monks for healing..mesmers have..pretty pathetic healing skills, so you kinda need to heal yourself in those situations..
